Keeping you informed
FairPoint Communications has launched a Community and Economic Development (CED) initiative in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. This program - called CONNECT NNE - is based on collaboration with local efforts, local investment in, and commitment to, growing regional economies. FairPoint is bringing the expertise of ViTAL Economy, a nationally known CED group to support CONNECT NNE's efforts.
FairPoint is working to partner with state, local and regional organizations interested in supporting economic growth. We started the CONNECT NNE program by seeking out and listening to community leaders, as well as, key leaders from the nonprofit, healthcare, education, government, business, economic and community development sectors. We hosted over 80 regional listening sessions, met with over 1,200 of local business and community leaders and conducted one-on-one interviews with key officials across the three state area.
We heard many views on the issues facing the region and gathered critical input on the CED tools local decision-makers need. FairPoint is using this input to determine the best role for the CONNECT NNE initiative, and to align both our investment in CED activities and network expansion.
Providing widely available broadband services is a core part of FairPoint's business strategy. We recently introduced a tool to help you register your interest for broadband services. Customers can log on and tell us where they need fast, reliable broadband. In turn, we will use this data to help guide the build out our advanced broadband network in northern New England.

FairPoint thinks many local citizens can have a roll in economic development. The CONNECT NNE effort is truly a grassroots-based partnership with citizens, local businesses and regional and state CED leaders. We are committed to supporting economic opportunity and this initiative puts into action one of FairPoint's most basic beliefs:
"Our future will be built on two distinct, but equally important tenets: providing the best available, most cost-effective technology to our entire customer base and partnering with the communities we serve to enhance the economic viability."
Gene Johnson, CEO, FairPoint Communications
We will continue to engage CED leaders in the region to help us further identify and prioritize CED tools and resources, and also determine the communication needs of the region.
We are also explaining how our IP/MPLS network expansion will enable economic regions to link remote resources - regardless of boundaries - to grow their economies. Through the CONNECT NNE activities, we will gather local input to help guide our investment in this next generation network infrastructure.
We expect to launch our enhanced CONNECT NNE website toward the end of the first quarter of 2009. This website will provide valuable information, and a place for communication between CED efforts. It is our intent to incorporate CED tools and resources on the site that will benefit the entire region.
Please take this opportunity to provide your e-mail so that we can keep you informed about important CONNECT NNE events and activities.
